The Late Bloomer with Humor

Stefanie Alberts is the unrelenting, unconventional, and unstoppable power behind 2 life-changing martial arts learning centers in San Diego. Whereas other studios concentrate exclusively on belt rankings, this business owner views martial arts as a culture, allowing students to break through their own limitations.

Teaching Life Lessons….and Karate
Eschewing the rhetoric that she was too old, Stefanie started training in martial arts at the age of 31 after giving birth to triplets a year prior! She then went on to earn 3 black belts and share the message that “you define you.” Whether Stef is working with women over 50, young girls, or your “hard to break though” teenage boys, this philosophy remains a hallmark of her business.

Untraditional is the New Tradition
Stefanie took a circuitous path before becoming a well-respected and quick-witted Sensei. Originally studying dentistry, she quickly discovered that she’d rather extract laughter than teeth. Her “Empower Hour” program arms women with not only an avenue of self-discovery, but also essential self-defense and life-saving moves. Creating a Positive and Powerful Life Experience Having learned at an early age, the power and punch of hurtful words, Stef and her staff teach respect and restraint. With students as young as 3 and as senior at 85; newbies, visitors, adults, parents, and siblings, are welcomed with warmth and her United Studios of Self Defense in 4s Ranch and Scripps Ranch are one of the few dojos where physically and intellectually challenged students thrive.

Giving is Part of Her DNA
Stefanie’s philosophy of giving first makes her an active and integral part of her community. Every month, her studio teaches free self-defense classes, strength training, and yoga to the Girl and Boy Scouts of America, the San Diego Library, the North County Business Chamber, ActivCare, and Generate Hope.

Her New Not for Profit for Children of Military Personnel
Coming from a military family, Stefanie recognized that children of active military personnel are a unique group: they exert little control over when and where their parents get deployed. By creating a not for profit just for this target, Stefanie teaches karate for free at her studios allowing the central teachings of peace, focus, discipline and control to become pillars of their lives.

Letting the Sunshine In
When not utterly exhausted from her business and volunteer work, Stef gets the chance to love and laugh with her family. Thinking that all of the hard work was over when she got her triplets out of diapers, she now realizes that 20-year olds are 20 times the work!
